What is Microsoft Word?
Microsoft Word, also called "Word," is a word processor and one of Microsoft's best-known products.
It comes with Microsoft Office and is the most popular word processor in the world. Word is thought to be used on over a billion devices worldwide.
Word, which first came out in 1983 under a different name, turned 25 in 2018. It's popular because it's easy to use and works on other operating systems, like Macintosh and Windows.
You can buy Word on its own or as part of Microsoft Office, which includes other programs like Excel and PowerPoint.
So, how did Word become the most popular word-processing software in the world and the market leader for the last 25 years? And where does the product go from here?
History of MS Word
The first version of Microsoft Word, Word 1.0, came out in October 1983. It was made by Charles Simonyi and Richard Brodie, who used to work at Xerox. Bill Gates and Paul Allen, who started Microsoft, hired the two in 1981. Word was called Multi-Tool Word at the time. It was made so computers with the UNIX operating system could use it.
Word was a WYSIWYG program, which means "what you see is what you get." This meant that a document would look the same on paper as it did on the screen. Word let people make, save, and print text documents, but it only became popular after a period of time. This may have been because it was competing with WordPerfect and WordStar, which were already very popular.
In 1985, Version 2.0 came out with new features like spellcheck and word count.
In the following years, Microsoft changed the program's code several times to work on different operating systems, such as DOS and Macintosh. The name was also changed to "Word," which is easier to remember.
Microsoft released Word 6.0 for Macintosh, Windows, and DOS in 1993. Word 6.0 was the last version made to run on DOS. It was also the previous version to be called by its version number; versions after that were called by the year they came out.
Microsoft has released a new Word version at least once every two years since then. The most recent version, Word 2019, which is part of Office 365, came out at the end of 2018.
What's next for Word?
Today, Word and the rest of the Office suite work well together and can be used on Windows, OS X, Android, and iOS. The CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, has said that Office is the most important API for the company (application programming interface).
Word 2019 is the most up-to-date version of the software. Just like Excel, which is a spreadsheet program, Word has had several updates to make it work better and ensure it keeps up with the times.
Some recent additions to Word are:
Translator: Word can now use the Microsoft Translator tool, which can be found under the Review tab, to translate words and sentences into other languages. Excel, OneNote, and PowerPoint also have this feature now.
Learning Tools: This feature makes it easy to understand your documents and helps you read more quickly. You can use it to change the width of the columns to help you focus, the color of the page to make it easier on your eyes, and the spacing between syllables to help you remember and say words better. This tool can also read your document out loud to you.
Digital pen: The newest versions of Word and other Office products support touch-enabled devices, making it simple to annotate and take notes by drawing with your finger, mouse, or digital pen.
Icons and SVGs (scalable vector graphics): Word now has a library of icons and 3D images that can be added to documents to make them look better and stand out. The user can change colors and effects.
